No other major sport has so many categories of outcomes to their games - regulation/OT win, shootout win (for tiebreaker scenarios), regulation loss, OT/shootout loss. It is a bit ridiculous.
Edit Reply

Re: NHL Standings: Playing What-If with the Points System

Or they could throw out the points system and calculate standings like the other major leagues do, by actual winning percentage. I don't know why the NHL still thinks it needs these standings points. I do realize shootouts could still be a concern, but at least no one would throw out the ridiculous "but what about the points in a season record!!!" argument any more.

Re: Daily Predictions Nov 10, 2011

Columbus almost had 'em, right up to the point where Chicago beat the hell out of them. It's still early in the process though. It's a testing system that we're working to constantly improve.

Re: Hockey Events by Time Elapsed Now Available

Woo! It has represented an entire summer of work. We are very open to feedback and requests for new analysis tools. Make sure to read the "Get Started Here" pages. The database should allow us to run some very interesting queries in the future.

Re: Datsyuk And Zetterberg: Together or Apart (Or How to Use This Website)

When I saw this earlier today, I emitted a high-pitched squeal of delight. I can't wait until my busy week is over so I can fiddle with it more thoroughly.

It's obvious a ton of effort went into this. Heck, the data entry alone looks like a nightmare. It has the promise to be a tremendously useful tool for examining the game differently. (Also useful for cherry-picking data sets and drawing absurd conclusions, which will be fun in and of itself.) Thanks for putting it out here for everybody to tinker with!

L. M.
